Nice ride! Though I don’t get how the El Guapo Craig built for his buddy (a medium) weighs 31.6 with a Revelation (fairly light) and a reasonable build, and this one (a large) with a Fox 36 (heavier than the RS) can come in over 2.5 lbs. less. I have seen a published weight of both 6.8lbs. and 7.25lbs. for the El Guapo. Anyone know actual weight w/shock?

  • Craig says:

    Tom,
My frame before I stripped the paint (with Monarch RT3) was 7.04 lbs for a large, stripping the paint saved me .18 lbs bringing it down to 6.86. I had a 2010 with a RP23 (painted) that was 7.25 lbs. I think the tapered headtube saves some weight and the RS shock is a little lighter then the RP23. The Revelation was only about 1/2 lb lighter the the Float 36 RLC. The EG I built for my buddy had all X7 components, much heavier then the XO/X9 I used plus my wheels are about a pound lighter then the Stan’s Flows. I hope that answers your questions.

  • Marco says:

Wow, sick build, I want one!
How does it compare to anything else you have ridden?
I am considering replacing my old Mk I Nomad. I would be happy to get it to 32#…

  • Craig says:

Marco I had a 2010 Guapo before this one set up very similar, this one is just much lighter and faster. Before that I was on a Motolite. I tested alot of 6″ bikes a in 2010/2011 and found the Guapo was best for what I used it for. If you have any more specific questions feel free to reach me at renotahoemtbguidesDOTcomATgmailDOTcom

    Hey,
It turns out that the EG that Craig built for me was probably closer to 30.75lbs. I switched to a WTB Silverado Saddle and ESI grips which saved me about 0.5lb. I took it to two local bike shops to have it weighed, and it came it at 30.24lbs. Now I kind of have the weight weenie bug.

  • John says:

HI Erik, Sub 27 pound EG is very much possible with a 2012 Medium frame and an RS Revelation.

That thing is tits, Craig. What does a setup like than run? $5k? Looks too nice to get dirty – I would just leave it on my roof rack to show off :P .

I have a shock question I am hoping someone can answer. I purchased a used 09 eg with a fox rp23. The thing was a rocket ship. I lent it to a friend who agreed with the ride quality and ended up keeping it. Back shopping I went and found a second 10 used eg with a fox rp23 which I built up and made the mistake of letting my wife ride. Back shopping I went. This time picked up a nos 10 off titus and under recommendation purchased a monarch rt3 to go with it. I dont know if it is just my shock that is a dud, but it is terrible. Lots of stiction, no small bump compliance, it is doing a terrible dis service to such an incredible bike. My wife fortunately went out of town for a week so I stole her rp23 to see if there was something weird with my frame. Nope, bike was as incredible as I had remembered it. Does anyone have any RT3 secrets?..Has anyone ridden both a rp23 and the rt3 to compare?..Am I losing my mind?..I am 5’9″ 165 bike has 36 van up front and full xtr kit. I want to get this thing dialed but at this point I am ready to scrap the RT3 and buy a rp23. Can anyone with rp23 tell me what tune you are running. The one on my buddies 09 and my wifes 10 are different.

    • Justin says:

I think there is something up with your RT3. I ditched my RP23 FOR an RT3 and never looked back and it’s a common to hear that. The RT3 should be very supple on the small stuff and offer much more mid-stroke damping than the RP23 in my (and other peoples) experience.

Like so many Mtb suspension items – QC is often not there at assembly. If you are game – rebuilding it is VERY easy with the only tool required being a $10 shock pump adamptor to reinflate the IFP and some 7wt oil. Video for rebuild is on the SRAM site as is a PDF manual.

After re-building mine (I was trying to fiddle with something but ended up just putting it back together) – it felt even better than stock. Perhaps I was using better oil but more likely – the IFP pressure was wrong from factory. If you’re shock is not smooth – rebuild it or get it rebuilt and you’ll be delighted I promise you.

  • Jun says:

I suggest you go for Fox 34 Talas 160, or go for Fox 34 160 float its a bit cheaper than
    talas..

Bro I would like to ask what is the
Drop out specs for EG is it 135x9mm, 135x12mm, 142x12mm or 150x12mm? Thanks

  • Pil says:

Isn’t that frame a bit too small for you? The post is so long. What’s your height?
